West University Branch Library

west university Library

In 1926, HCPL established a library station at the West University School. The station closed briefly in 1934 but soon reopened. Circulation at the school grew each year and by the early 1940s exceeded 10,000 checkouts a year.  The City offered space at the new community center to house a new branch given high community demand.  The branch opened officially in November 1941 with a card table, chair, and bookcase with just 100 books. The library was open three mornings a week and Librarian Thelma Sanders made $22 a month.

The library branch originally opened in a corner of the West University Community Center in 1942. During World War II it was moved to a temporary home in the field office of Reed and Yancey Realtors (northwest corner of Rice and Auden). In 1963, the library moved into a new 6,100 square foot facility at its current location at 6108 Auden. [Gegemen, June A. Stepping Back in Time: A History of West University Place. Houston: D. Armstrong Co. 1999]  The library was renovated in 1984, 2006, and again in 2016.  Today the library continues working with the City of West University to present quality programs in other city buildings, such as the Scout House and the Community Center.
